Phase 1 and Phase 2 site investigations:
• Phase 1:
A desk study and walkover of the site is undertaken to establish whether its history and previous land use may have caused ground contamination. Underlying site conditions are reviewed including the position of any services. The scope of the investigation will vary according to the proposed future use of the site, the risks to its future users and the environment and each site’s location, history and individual conditions.
• Phase 2:
Intrusive investigations are carried out in response to risks identified by the Phase 1 site investigation.

Risk Assessments

Quantitative risk assessments following the Source-Pathway-Receptor model to establish the relationships between contaminants and who or what they have the potential to affect.

Source – a substance or substances causing contamination with the potential to harm organisms, ecosystems or cause pollution of controlled waters.

Pathway - A potential route by which a contaminant might reach a receptor.

Receptor - Something that could be harmed by a contaminant, e.g. organisms including humans, ecosystems, waters (groundwater, rivers, lakes and reservoirs) and structures.

A pollutant linkage occurs when a source, pathway and receptor exist together.

Remediation
